Swimmers

First holding meets way back in 1962, the then five-team All City Swim League was quite different from the massive organization we see today. Now with thirteen teams and bringing in more than 2000 individual swimmers, All City has become a model for recreational swim leagues. Here are 10 fun facts about our great league!
- In its early days, lacking a competition-size pool, Shorewood Hills hosted their dual meets in Lake Mendota.
- Since 1995, the Ridgewood Green Buns have won all but two All City titles, with their only losses coming in 2009 (Middleton) and 2014 (Shorewood Hills).
- The oldest available results, 1972, show that only one team (Ridgewood) had enough swimmers for a “C” relay in one age group (8 and under girls). In 2015, 8 and under girls were once again the largest age group. The deepest team was still Ridgewood, but they now managed to field a “J” relay.
- While All City meets tend to consist of lots of record-breaking swims, some records stand the test of time. The longest-held record is in the 8 and under boys 100 yard free relay, set in 1977, with the team of E. Barnhart, T. Wuerger, E. Sturm, and T. Bargman bringing in a mind-boggling time of 1:03.63. For comparison’s sake, 2014’s winning relay in that event did not get within 3 seconds of that time.
- The longest-standing member pool that was not a member of the original five is Monona, in the league since 1965. The original five were Ridgewood, Shorewood, West Side, Maple Bluff and Hill Farm.
- The first online live stream of the meet came when Ridgewood hosted in 2007, but the first live coverage came the year before, when Monona broadcast the meet on a public TV station.
- Only four teams have ever won the All City Swim title, at least among the meets with recorded point totals: Ridgewood, Parkcrest, Shorewood Hills, and Middleton.
- The list of teams that have come in second is longer, totaling eight teams: Ridgewood, Shorewood Hills, Middleton, Parkcrest, Monona, Seminole, Hill Farm, and West Side.
- 2011 was the first All City meet to consist of more than 12 teams.
- Despite coming in 12th in their first All City in 2006, Hawks Landing did win the food drive trophy in their debut.
